Frederick, MD – Alderman Kelly Russell has called for a Special Meeting of the Mayor and Board of Alderman to be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, August 3, 2012 in the Board Room at City Hall. The item to be discussed is a short term contract with American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to restore service to the City’s red light cameras.
On Thursday, July 19, the Board of Aldermen voted 3-2 to table a new contract agreement that would have continued existing service with ATS, and also would have provided equipment upgrades and other enhancements to the program. Opposed to the tabling were Aldermen Russell and O’Connor. Subsequently, on Thursday, July 26, 2012, Mayor Randy McClement directed Police Chief Kim Dine to terminate the contract agreement with ATS, resulting in a shutdown of the red light cameras.
The Red Light Camera Program is a vital safety program that has statistically proven its worth in reducing red light violations at some of the City’s most dangerous intersections. In an email to the Mayor on Friday, July 27 regarding the delayed contract discussions, Alderman Russell said, “It is vital that we continue the enforcement as seamlessly as possible to maximize the safety of folks on our roads, and continue to see reductions in violations and crashes in our most ‘at risk’ intersections.”
