In response to the escalating trend of Hyundai and Kia vehicle thefts, the Frederick Police Department is launching an initiative designed to safeguard the vehicles of local residents. The department will be distributing free steering wheel locks to eligible Frederick City residents on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
The first come, first serve drive-thru event will take place at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium, located at 21 Stadium Drive. Distribution will run from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or until available supplies are exhausted. FPD is committed to addressing a nationwide trend that sees thieves using USB cables to bypass the ignition on certain Hyundai and Kia models. At this time, only Hyundai and Kia owners residing in The City of Frederick are eligible to participate.
The following documentation will be required:
- A valid driver's license with proof of city residency.
- Vehicle registration confirming ownership of a 2010-2021 Hyundai or Kia with a mechanical key (push-start vehicles do not qualify for this program).
"The steering wheel locks offer an extra layer of protection for Hyundai and Kia owners,” says Lieutenant Holler of FPD's Criminal Investigations Division. 'We are committed to prioritizing the safety of our residents and providing our community with reassurance regarding the security of their vehicles.”
Hyundai Motor America has contributed a limited quantity of steering wheel locks. Given the anticipated high demand, attendees are strongly advised to arrive early at Harry Grove Stadium with their driver’s license and vehicle registration readily available for inspection. For each eligible vehicle registration, one complimentary steering wheel lock will be provided, subject to availability.
