On May 7, 2023, officers with the Frederick Police Department’s patrol squad A made an arrest of a Frederick man in possession of a handgun.
At approximately 2:05 p.m., OFC. Gerand along with several other officers from FPD patrol squad A were dispatched for a weapons complaint in the area of S. Market St and Carroll Creek. Multiple calls from witnesses reported a man brandishing a handgun and making threats. The witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect.
Officers located a suspect matching the description, later identified as Jerrell Isaiah Smith, 27, of Frederick, walking southbound in the 100 block of N. Market St. During the interaction, officers conducted a Terry Frisk, and a loaded handgun was found on Smith’s person. Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for processing.
It should be noted that Mr. Smith was not the original suspect in the incident. However, due to the matching description and reasonable suspicion, officers conducted a lawful search that led to the discovery of the handgun.
