Once a year the City of Frederick’s Water Department clears the sediment from the City’s water mains by opening the fire hydrants and discharging water. This activity assists in delivering the consistently highest quality of water and serves as preventive maintenance to the hydrants themselves, assuring all are in good working condition. Water Department crews know the importance of water conservation and carefully monitor the flow of water during the program.
During the flushing procedure some discoloration in the water may be noticed. If so, residents are advised to run cold water on a faucet or spigot for several minutes to let the water clear up.
Lines will be flushed according to the following schedule:
May 1st to 5th, 7 am to 3 pm – all areas West of State Route 15.
May 8th to 11th, 7 am to 3 pm – all areas East of State Route 15.
May 12th, 2 am until complete – greater downtown district.
