Clean up of tanker fire site continues; still no threat to public

Following Saturday’s gas tanker explosion and fire on Route 15, The City of Frederick is continuing to partner with Frederick County and Maryland Department of the Environment to monitor the environmental impacts of the incident.

In the coming days and potentially weeks, residents will see workers in the area around the crash conducting additional tests and addressing  soils as necessary. Work will include removing contaminated soils and replacing them with clean soil and stabilizing.

Further examination continues to reveal no damage to Carroll Creek or to the City’s sanitary sewer system. Fuel did enter limited sections of storm drain and culverts between the location of the accident and Baker Park. These sections will also be cleaned and inspected during the remediation processThere remains no threat to the public or to residences as the fuel was localized only to a small area of Baker Park

Apple Avenue, where there was significant fire damage, will remain closed for an extended period of time for staff to conduct their work.

The nature of the crash remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police and all inquiries will be directed to the investigating agency.
