On June 27, 2021 at approximately 3:16am the Frederick Police Department received two calls for possible shots fired in the area of the Unit Block of East Church Street. OFC. Wharton was in the area almost immediately and observed a male in that area. OFC. Wharton got out to speak with the individual later identified as Jonathan Drew Bartgis, 22. Mr. Bartgis immediately and suddenly began to flee from OFC. Wharton on foot. After a short foot chase Mr. Bartgis was taken into custody safely.
Mr. Bartgis was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun at the time he was taken into custody. Detectives arrived on scene shortly thereafter and assumed the investigation. According to witnesses there was an altercation between Mr. Bartgis and some individuals in a dark colored SUV.
We do not have any further description of the other parties involved, and have not found anyone or anything that was struck by the gunfire. At this time there is no indication that this firearms discharge is related to any others.
Bartgis has been charged with the following:
- Loaded handgun on person.
- Handgun on person.
- Regulated firearm- Illegal possession.
- Illegal possession of ammunition.
- Discharge firearm within city limits
