[ARCHIVED] Police investigate vehicle theft and related collision causing road closure CR# 12-40022

The Frederick Police Department is currently investigating a motor vehicle theft and related collision after a vehicle chase on Monocacy Blvd.

At approximately 12:30 am, OFC S. Shepardson attempted to stop a black Mercedes SUV in the vicinity of S. Carroll St. for a motor vehicle violation. The driver refused to stop and lost control on Monocacy Blvd when he struck the curb on the round-about. The vehicle then struck a light pole and rolled over several times after leaving the roadway and came to rest in the wood line. When officers approached the vehicle it was unoccupied and they believed the driver fled on foot. A two-hour search eventually revealed that the suspect had been ejected from the vehicle and thrown approximately 60 feet. He was found unconscious and buried deep inside a thicket of vines and foliage against a large boulder. EMS responded and the suspect was taken via ground ambulance to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown where he is listed in stable condition. Due to the severity of the collision and the suspect's life-threatening injuries a team of traffic accident reconstructionists was called in requiring a section of Monocacy Blvd to be shut down. Additionally, it was determined that the suspect was an employee at Monocacy Motors and had stolen the vehicle and dealer tags that were on it. The investigation continues. The suspect's name is being withheld pending the outcome of the investigation and the notification of next-of-kin. The Frederick Police Department would also like to thank the Frederick County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police for their invaluable assistance in the search for the suspect. SGT E.G.
