[ARCHIVED] FPD arrests two in connection with shooting; investigation still ongoing

Frederick Police Department has made two arrests of suspects in connection with a Feb. 9 shooting that left one man injured.

On Feb. 12, 2021 OFC. Tonga observed a vehicle in the area of Key Parkway and Willowdale Drive matching the description of a silver sedan that was used in the shooting, which occurred in the unit block of Pendleton Court.

By the time OFC. Tonga was able to get turned around and locate the vehicle it was parked and unoccupied in the area of the 100 block of Willowdale Drive. At that time plain, clothes units with the FPD Street Crimes Unit set up and maintained surveillance of the vehicle. Detectives observed two males enter the vehicle and leave the area quickly before they could approach. At that time Detectives attempted to stop the vehicle. At that point, the driver, later identified as Sirreginald Benton, 23, of Frederick, intentionally drove his vehicle into the undercover vehicle disabling both vehicles, and injuring the Officer.

Benton and the passenger, were both arrested as they attempted to flee on foot. Upon taking Benton into custody he was found to be in possession of a handgun. Benton was taken to FPD headquarters and questioned prior to being taken to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for processing. The front seat passenger was questioned and released and we do not believe he is involved at this time. The injuries suffered by the Officer were minor and he was treated on scene by EMS. Benton was charged with one count of the following;

  • 1st degree assault
  • 2nd Degree Assault
  • Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement
  •  Accessory after the fact (related to 1st Degree Assault)
  • Handgun on Person
  • Handgun in Vehicle
  • Illegal Possession of a Regulated Firearm
  • Illegal Possession of Ammunition

On Feb. 22, Det. Wolfe obtained an arrest warrant for Mekhi Davis, 21, of Frederick, based on the information she obtained during this investigation. On Feb. 23 she located Davis as he arrived for an appointment at the courthouse. He was taken into custody without incident. Mr. Davis was taken to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for processing. Mr. Davis was charged with one count of each of the following:

  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Use of a Firearm during a Felony
