City of Frederick sees historic low crime rate in 2020

Part 1 Crimes 2020

Crime hit historic lows in 2020 for the City of Frederick, continuing a downward trend the city has experienced for the last decade.

There were 1,388 Part 1 crimes committed in 2020, down from 1,674 in 2019 and a decrease of more than 20 percent since 2016. Part 1 crimes, as reported in Uniform Crime Reports, include: homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, stolen auto and arson. Violent crimes, which include homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, dropped to a five-year low of 250.

Part 1 crimes have steadily declined annually since 2012 when there were 2,280 part 1 crimes committed.

Frederick Police Department made 2,657 total arrests in 2020, down from 5,004 total arrests in 2019.

COVID-19 worked as a force multiplier in dropping the crime rate, but the department still responded to more than 94,000 calls for service in 2020, which is in line with the average number of calls for service since 2011.

The department anticipates the possibility that crime may increase as COVID-19 restrictions loosen and more people are out in public. However, the agency will continue to utilize effective police strategies to do everything in its power to keep residents and the community safe.
