On 03/28/2012 the Frederick Police Department (FPD) was notified of an FPD police car allegedly driving erratically. Efforts were made to identify the vehicle and operator in order to determine the cause of the behavior. Members of the department were able to locate the vehicle and driver of the car in Middletown, Md. Initial investigation revealed the operator of the car, Officer Robert Pierce, was off duty and involved in a single vehicle collision on US 15 at Jefferson Street where he struck a guard rail. The Frederick County Sheriff's office was contacted and requested to conduct an investigation into the accident.
The FCSO investigation revealed that Officer Pierce was involved in a single vehicle accident and probable cause existed to believe he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Officer Pierce was arrested and transported to the FCSO for further processing. The Frederick Police Department regrets this unfortunate incident and we are thankful for the efforts of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office and their professionalism in assisting and their handling of this case.
Officer Robert Piece is an 11 year veteran of the department and has been assigned to the Patrol Division during his entire employment. Officer Pierce is currently suspended pending the results of the investigation by the Sheriff's Office and also a concurrent, separate, internal investigation being conducted by the Frederick Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit.
