[ARCHIVED] FPD Honored at Governor's Crime Prevention Awards

Frederick Police Members and Programs Honored at 37th Annual Governor's Crime Prevention Awards

December 13, 2016

FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Police Department is proud to announce the recognition of members and programs of this agency and the community by the Governor and Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute.  The award ceremony was held today, December 13th in Glen Burnie, MD.

“The Frederick Police Department is honored to have several of our crime prevention and community policing partnership programs recognized by the Community Crime Prevention Institute at the 37th Annual Governors Crime Prevention Awards Ceremony this morning,” commented Chief Hargis. “Our department remains committed to Community Policing and being responsive to the community’s needs as we work together to solve problems and improve the quality of life.”

OFFICER MICHAEL FIGGINS

Governor's Crime Prevention Award for Law Enforcement

OFC Figgins started with the Frederick Police Department on October 1, 2007.  In 2012, he was transferred to the Outreach Unit and has since assumed the coordination responsibilities for the Police Activities League (PAL) program.

As the PAL Coordinator, Officer Figgins schedules and prepares programs and services for the youth, coordinates other agencies to assist, and runs the summer camp.  The summer camp is designed to help youth develop a stronger sense of responsibility and respect.  Officer Figgins is able to teach respect not only for others, but for themselves. He has enabled them to learn how to handle new situations and develop people skills.

These goals were met and exceeded by the work and effort put forth by OFC Figgins.  The ability to prevent crime starts with keeping kids engaged and teaching life skills.

FREDERICK POLICE DEPARTMENT – CAUGHT BEING GOOD PROGRAM

Governor’s Award for Outstanding Proactive Crime Prevention Programs in Maryland

The Caught Being Good Program was designed to create open dialogue between citizens and police.  The program allows for officers to show gratitude for public assistance and voluntary compliance of the laws.   Some examples are: crosswalks, bikes on the sidewalk, skateboarding, littering, loitering etc.

FREDERICK POLICE DEPARTMENT - YOUTH RESOURCE GUIDE

Governor’s Award for Outstanding Proactive Crime Prevention Programs in Maryland

Officers, through their daily interactions with parents and guardians, found that many did not know where to go to access information about programs and services.  Through these interactions the department decided to create the Youth Resource Guide.

The Youth Resource Guide, created in 2014, provides parents, guardians, and youth with information about programs and services for ages 5-21 in Frederick County.   Featured programs and services include:  after-school programs, child & family services, dropout prevention, educational programs, hotlines & crisis services, job assistance, mental health, mentoring programs, substance abuse treatment, and volunteer opportunities.
