[ARCHIVED] Suspect Charged in Key Parkway Stabbing Investigation

The Frederick Police Department has charged a suspect in the June 3, 2016 stabbing of two individuals in the 1300 block of Key Parkway.

UPDATE:

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division identified a suspect in the June 3, 2016 stabbing of two individuals. Through extensive investigation and follow up, police were able to identify the suspect as Tyrone Smallwood, age 16, of Frederick.

Smallwood was taken into custody without incident shortly before noon on today's date. He was later transported to the Frederick County Detention Center and charged as an adult with one count of attempted second degree murder, two counts of first degree assault and one count of participation in a criminal gang. He is currently awaiting appearance before a District Court Commissioner.

The investigation of the incident revealed two groups of individuals engaged in an altercation in the 1300 block of Key Parkway. A number of the involved participants were discovered to be known gang members, which appears to be the motive for this incident. During this altercation, two individuals sustained stab wounds from an edged weapon. Smallwood was determined to have inflicted the stab wounds resulting in the victims' injuries. The names of the victims are not being released to protect their identity.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Detectives are requesting anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the lead investigator, Det. Doug Ames, at 301-600-1253. Anonymous information may be provided to the Frederick Police Department Crime Tip Line at 301-600-TIPS.

Original Release:

On Friday, June 3, 2016 at approximately 8:47 PM, Frederick Police Officers responded to the area of Key Parkway and Baker Place West for a reported fight.

As Officers arrived on scene two assault victims were located. Both victims were suffering from injuries consistent with a stabbing. One victim was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The second victim was transported by the Maryland State Police Aviation Division to a regional trauma center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division are on scene investigating this assault. A portion of Key Parkway was closed as a result of this investigation and remains closed as of this release. The portion of Key Parkway affected by this closure is between McCain Drive and Waverly Drive.

Detectives are requesting anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the lead investigator, Det. Doug Ames, at 301-600-1253. Anonymous information may be provided to the Frederick Police Department Crime Tip Line at 301-600-TIPS.

No further information regarding the victims in this case will be released at this time.
