Frederick, MD – April 28, 2016: Lincoln Elementary School (LES) will join schools around the country to celebrate International Bike and Walk to School Day on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Many students will be riding or walking to school on Wednesday along with parents, teachers and community leaders.

Bicyclists and walkers will gather at McCurdy Field on West Patrick Street at 7:15 am before biking and walking as a group to LES, with a planned arrival to the school by 8:30 am. Other special activities associated with the event, including a drawing for free bikes, will occur at the end of the day with a culminating ceremony at 3:30 pm.

Leading up to the May 4th International Bike and Work to School Day, on Monday, May 2, fourth grade LES students will participate in a bike safety education program in the morning by Frederick Bicycle Coalition and be fitted for and given free bike helmets by Safe Kids Frederick. A Bike Rodeo led by local League Cycling Instructors for these students will then take place at LES on Tuesday, May 3rd from 7:15 to 8:30 AM so that students can put their best bike and safety skills to the test.

International Bike and Walk to School Day encourages a celebration for students in the month of May and builds on the success of enabling students to safely bike or walk to school.

“I am happy to be part of promoting this great bicycling and walking event at Lincoln Elementary School in keeping with our Bike Friendly Community,” said Mayor Randy McClement.

International Bike and Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by Lincoln Elementary School, Safe Kids Frederick, The City of Frederick Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Frederick Bicycle Coalition, Frederick Pedalers, and the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. Additionally, community-based businesses and organizations Gravel and Grind, Mt. Airy Bikes, Bike Escape, Frederick Keys, Rita’s Italian Ice, TransIT, State Highway Administration of Maryland, Bike Maryland, Boys & Girls Clubs of Frederick County, and Bells Sports are supporting the event at Lincoln Elementary School. The City of Frederick Police department is also participating in the week’s events.
