[ARCHIVED] Back to School Safety Tips

With schools starting next week, the Frederick Police Department encourages all to use extra caution when traveling in school zones.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

August 20, 2015

FREDERICK, MD - With schools starting next week, the Frederick Police Department encourages all to use extra caution when traveling in school zones.

Here are some tips to help ensure a safe start to the school year.

Reminders for Motorists:
• Slow down. Observe the speed limit in school zones at all times. Also be aware that many
schools have school crossing guards to assist children in crossing the streets.
• Be careful when driving on neighborhood streets and around school zones.
• Be alert for children walking or riding bicycles as you back out of your driveway.
• Pay attention to parking regulations in the area of school zones. Fire lanes, no parking,
parking on sidewalks, blocking fire hydrants and driveways will be enforced.
• Stop your car when you see a school bus with an extended stop arm signal and red flashing
lights. Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing.
• Maryland has a “hands free” law which means no texting or talking on your cell phone unless
you have a hands free device.

Tips for Pedestrians:
• If your child walks to school, make sure you check the route and have your child/children
cross at intersections with crosswalks.
• Walk in groups – there is safety in numbers.
• Remind children to avoid short cuts unless they have been pre-approved by the parent or
guardian.
• Remind children to not walk in the road and to cross only at marked crosswalks or corners.
• Before crossing the street, stop and look left, then right, then left again.

The Frederick Police Department will continue to work diligently to ensure a safe and happy school year for the children of Frederick.
