The City of Frederick Releases Bicycle Lane Safety Video
Frederick, MD – In the summer of 2010, Mayor McClement introduced the Ad Hoc Bicycle Committee in The City of Frederick. This citizen-based group was tasked with making recommendations to the City to promote biking ultimately becoming a designated Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. One of those recommendations became a reality when designated bike lanes were established on 7th Street beginning at Military Avenue. The “Bicycle Lane Safety” video followed in an effort to promote the safe use of bike lanes for both cyclists and motorists.
The new Bicycle Lane Safety video will air at 12:00 noon and 12:30PM weekdays on Channel 99 and can be viewed on the City’s Granicus video streaming page at www.cityoffrederick.com/channel99 (“Click” Watch Meetings & Videos). The “Bicycle Lane Safety” video is located under the “Audio Visual Department Productions” category.
In May 2011, The City of Frederick received an Honorable Mention as a 2011 Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The 2012 application for Bicycle Friendly Community including the “Bike Lane Safety” video was submitted in February of this year. This video meets many of the elements of the League of American Bicyclist’s “5 E’s” - Enforcement, Engineering, Encouragement, Evaluation and Education. By meeting these goals, the Ad Hoc Committee hopes that The City of Frederick will again receive a positive designation from The League of American Bicyclists for 2012.
Continuing to show support for the Ad Hoc Committee, Mayor McClement said, “This educational video, produced, written, and filmed with in-house staff is another positive move by The City of Frederick to become a Bicycle Friendly Community. Promoting and teaching safety is part of the “5 E’s” to become designated by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community.”
