Maryland Renters’ Tax Credit Program
September 1, 2015 Deadline to File
Frederick, MD - January 30, 2015: A tax credit for low income Maryland renters is available through the State Department of Assessments and Taxation. The Renters' Tax Credit program provides property tax credits for residential renters who meet certain requirements. The plan was modeled after and designed to be similar in principle to the Homeowners' Tax Credit Program.
Renters in Maryland indirectly pay property taxes as part of their rent and should have some protection, as do homeowners. If a Maryland renter qualifies under specified conditions, they can receive a credit of as much as $750. The credit is paid as a direct check from the State of Maryland.
Once a renter is accepted into the program, they automatically receive an application every year thereafter. Renters must apply every year to make sure they're still eligible for the program.
Specific information regarding the tax credit can be found at http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/rtc.html. Applications will be available online after February 5.
To request a mailed application, renters should call 410-767-4433, toll-free 800-944-7403 or emailing us taxcreditapp@dat.state.md.us. The application will be will be mailed after February 1, 2015. The deadline to file the renter’s tax credit application is September 1, 2015.
