Officers from the Frederick Police Department stopped and contacted 223 drivers on Tuesday night during a Sobriety Checkpoint operation in the 500 block of West Patrick Street, near the entrance to West Frederick Middle School. As part of a Holiday effort to promote safe driving, officers stopped all vehicles traveling West-bound on West Patrick Street in this area between the hours of 10:45 pm and 1:15 am, checking for signs of alcohol impaired driving and other traffic safety violations, and handing out driver safety tips and information regarding impaired driving, speeding, and seatbelts.
The checkpoint was announced via press release on 12/19, though the specific date, time and location were withheld at that time. At the checkpoint on New Year's Eve, 1 arrest was made for driving under the influence of alcohol. Drivers are again reminded to report possible drunk drivers to police, and to use caution on the roads, especially during the holidays. A drunk driver kills someone in Maryland every 57 hours, according to statistics provided by the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
