[ARCHIVED] Red-Light Camera Program - New Locations

Red-Light Camera Program - New Locations

The City of Frederick will be expanding its red-light safety camera program with two more cameras on Sunday, September 15, 2013. The decision is expected to bring an enhanced level of traffic safety to these intersections. The additional cameras will be added to the city’s current program consisting of 12 cameras.

For 30 days beginning Sunday, September 15th, authorities will issue warning notices without fines for red-light running violations captured on the new cameras. The warning period will give drivers time to adjust to the presence of 24-hour enforcement. Once the warning phase ends, police will issue citations with $75 fines for running a red light.

Since The City of Frederick began its photo enforcement program, red-light running violations at intersections with cameras have fallen 55 percent when comparing July 2005 to July 2013, the most recent available monthly data. Decreases in violations indicate a change in driver behavior and improved safety because of a diminished opportunity for dangerous red-light running crashes.

“There is no doubt the addition of red-light cameras in Frederick has increased safety. This is a public safety program that deters red-light running crashes by changing driver behavior. We have experienced a significant decrease in motor vehicle crashes at our current red-light camera intersections, which illustrates the effectiveness of this program,” said Lt. Jason Keckler, administrator of the red-light camera program for the Frederick Police Department.

The new red-light safety cameras will be located at these intersections:

- Eastbound W. South St. at S. Jefferson St. and Northbound S. Jefferson St. at W. South St.

- Eastbound W. South St. at Center St./S. Bentz St.

Cameras operate 24 hours a day and capture images of vehicles when they run a red light at an intersection. All violations are issued after police review the photographic and video evidence. Signs posted along the street will alert drivers that red-light safety cameras are in use at the intersection ahead. Warnings and citations will be mailed to the owner of the vehicle identified in the red-light running photographic evidence, as provided for in state law.

The City of Frederick has contracted with American Traffic Solutions Inc. (ATS) to provide red-light camera program services. ATS provides automated enforcement programs in nearly 300 communities across North America.
