Sustainable Maryland Approves City’s Application for Certification
One of Eight Municipalities in Maryland
to Achieve this Distinction

Frederick, MD -- The City of Frederick is pleased to announce that the Sustainable Certified Executive Committee has approved The City of Frederick’s application for certification. The City of Frederick accumulated 165 points and completed the required mandatory and priority actions necessary for certification. As one of only eight municipalities in Maryland to achieve this distinction, the Green Initiative Team along with City staff under the direction of Joe Adkins, Deputy Director of Planning, worked together to achieve this goal. The Mayor and Board of Aldermen officially created The Green Team by adopting Resolution 11-17 at the August 18, 2011 Public Meeting.

“This administration has been taking steps to become a leader in sustainable practices. With the outstanding efforts of our Green Initiative Team and City Staff, we are well on our way. We are committed to meeting our needs without compromising future generations from meeting their needs. It is our responsibility to prepare for the needs of our children, grandchildren and future generations to come.” said Mayor Randy McClement.

Joe Adkins, Deputy Director of Planning said, “The Green Initiative Team has worked very hard to accomplish this goal. The City of Frederick should be very proud of its efforts and position at the forefront of sustainability in Maryland. Sustainable Maryland Certified (SMC) is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland (EFC) designed to support Maryland's 157 municipalities as they look for cost-effective and strategic ways to protect their natural assets and revitalize their communities. Using best practices in resource areas like water, energy, planning, health, food, and economy, a municipality can earn points toward sustainability certification.
